Welcoming Our New Mustangs Home: The Beginning of a New Chapter

Some journeys begin long before the travel day arrives. For our two new wild mustangs, their story began long before our trailer door opened to bring them home.

For us, this chapter began with small dreams, careful preparation, and the belief that healing is possible—for horses and humans alike.

This month, Unbridled Wild Connections welcomed two new BLM mustangs home to Lucky Oak Ridge Ranch.

The beginning of a new chapter

For us, this moment represents more than an adoption. It marks the beginning of a relationship—one built not on expectation or control, but on trust, choice, and time.

Nestled on a quiet forested ranch in South Carolina, Lucky Oak Ridge Ranch serves as the home of Unbridled Wild Connections—a place where horses and humans alike are invited to slow down, reconnect, and discover what becomes possible in safe, authentic relationships.

Here, healing begins with space, patience, and the freedom to choose.

These horses were both born wild.

One of the many privileges of adopting BLM mustangs is honoring the unique landscapes and histories they carry with them. These horses come from western herd management areas, bringing with them the instincts, resilience, and wisdom of life in the wild.

As we considered which horses might someday support the mission of Unbridled Wild Connections, we looked not for perfection, but for possibility—horses whose stories, resilience, and individuality spoke to the values of choice, connection, and trust.

They learned from their families, moved across open landscapes, and carried the instincts of generations before them. Like many mustangs, their stories have been shaped by resilience, adaptation, and change.

And now, their journey has brought them here.

As we watched them step off the trailer and into this next chapter, we were reminded of something we see time and again: healing rarely happens all at once. It unfolds in moments.

A curious glance. A shared breath. The quiet realization that safety may exist where it once did not.

At Unbridled Wild Connections, our work is rooted in liberty-based principles that honor choice, relationship, and mutual trust. We believe relationships cannot be forced. Trust cannot be demanded. Instead, both horses and humans thrive when given the opportunity to choose connection freely.

The gentling and transition of these mustangs will draw upon years of liberty horsemanship experience developed through Unbridled Wild, emphasizing safety, emotional regulation, and relationship before performance.

Every mustang carries a story.

There are no timelines here. No pressure to move faster than readiness allows.

Only an invitation to discover what becomes possible when trust is built one moment at a time.

Over the coming months, these mustangs will begin a slow, relationship-centered transition. They will teach us—as wild horses so often do—about regulation, resilience, boundaries, and the courage it takes to trust again.

The hope is that in the near future, they may become partners in our equine-assisted learning programs, helping women and girls discover their own unbridled strength. But for now, they simply get to be horses.

To rest. To observe. To settle. To learn that they are safe.
